Service & Philosophy
One Rider at a Time
We are not a mass-market rental shop. We are a partner for your journey.
The Shimanami Kaido is a world-class cycling paradise, but to truly unlock its potential—to conquer every island, ascend every panoramic viewpoint, and feel the rush of the sea breeze without compromise—you need more than just a bicycle. You need a perfect machine and a team that understands the rider’s soul.
The Sanctuary on Mukaishima
Our base is located on Mukaishima Island, just a short ferry ride across the channel from Onomichi Station. While the station area is often chaotic with tourists, our location is a quiet sanctuary. Here, away from the crowds, we take the time to conduct a meticulous fitting, ensuring your bike feels like an extension of your body before you take your first pedal stroke.
Master Mechanic & Premium Fleet
We offer the finest fleet on the route, ranging from high-performance Carbon Road Bikes to Full-Suspension MTBs and top-tier E-Road/E-MTBs. Every bike is maintained by our lead mechanic, a master craftsman with over a decade of experience running a pro shop in Kyoto. We don’t just “rent” bikes; we provide machines tuned to perfection, comparable to what you ride at home—or better.
Total Freedom & Concierge Support We believe you should focus solely on the ride and the breathtaking views. That is why we offer comprehensive support:
Support Car & Luggage Transfer: We move your bags to your hotel so you can ride light.
One-Way Drop-off: Finish your ride at Ikuchijima or even Hiroshima Station.
Full Customization: From pannier bags to SPD pedals, we cater to every preference.
For the cyclist who seeks quality over quantity, and who wants to explore the depths of the Seto Inland Sea with zero stress: We are your only choice.
Recommended cycling route on the Shimanami Kaido
1-day course
Onomichi to Ikuchi-jima
- 40km (25mi)
- Cycling 3h + Stopping 3h
- 180m (600ft) up
This route involves cycling from Onomichi to Ikuchijima and then either dropping off your bike there or returning to Onomichi by ferry. It’s recommended for people who only have one day to spare.
Detail
From the station to the island
Get off at Onomichi Station and take the ferry (which goes back and forth across the narrow waterway) to the other side.
Rent a bicycle
Rent a bike at our shop. We recommend an e-bike.
As the opposite shore is an island, it’s less crowded than in front of the station, allowing you to leisurely get fitted for your bike and plan your route.
Crossing the first bridge
The official route is on the east side of Shimano, and if you cycle along the blue line you will soon reach Innoshima Bridge.
The lower level of this bridge is a bicycle lane, allowing you to enjoy spectacular views of the ocean directly below.
Explore the pirate island, Innoshima
The second island, Innoshima, was the base of Japan’s most famous navy, the Murakami Navy. You can learn about its history at Murakami Suigun Castle.
There are also many sweets to choose from, and hassaku daifuku is a famous treat.
Shirataki Observatory
If you’re a true hill climber or mountain biker, you might want to try climbing Mt. Shirataki, the highest point of Innoshima. You can reach the eighth station on a paved road.
It was once a pirate lookout and a training ground for Buddhists. Experience the breathtaking ocean views while experiencing history.
Explore Ikuchijima, the island of art and lemons
After crossing a small bridge, you will arrive at your destination, Ikuchijima. Like Naoshima, Ikuchijima is famous as an “island of art.” For over 30 years, various artists have been creating works all over the island, and currently 17 works are on display in various locations. It will be fun to look around and see them.
The island has also been focusing on lemon cultivation for over 100 years, and at a facility called “Lemon Valley,” you can enjoy lemon sweets and drinks surrounded by lemon fields and the scent of lemons.
Azumi Setoda (Aman Group)
Azumi Setoda is an innovative hotel designed by Adrian Zecca, founder of the global hotel brand Aman Group. Opened in 2021, it was renovated from the mansion of a wealthy island merchant and is a highly popular hotel that skillfully blends island culture with contemporary art. While it is difficult to find a room in the main building, the annex has a number of rooms and is reasonably priced. There are also a variety of restaurants nearby, so we highly recommend spending a night on the island.
Return to Onomichi by ferry
There are about six ferries a day from Setoda, where Azumi is located, to Onomichi. You can carry your bicycle on the ferry, so it’s a good idea to take your bicycle back to Onomichi with you.
